5 Things to Look for in a Female-Focused PT
Choosing a personal trainer can feel like a total minefield these days. With so many “female-focused” coaches popping up, it can be hard to know who actually understands women’s bodies, and who’s just using the label as a marketing tool.
When you’re training through the real-life stuff - pregnancy, postpartum, peri/menopause, hormonal shifts, and everything in between - you need more than a cookie-cutter plan. You need a coach who gets it.
Here are 5 green flags to look out for when picking a female-focused PT:
1. They Understand Pelvic Floor Health
And I mean really understand it. Not just “do your kegels and off you go.” A good female-focused coach knows about pressure management, breath control, the importance of relaxation for overactive muscles, and how tension plays a role in pelvic health. This kind of knowledge makes a huge difference when training during pregnancy, postpartum, or through the changes of peri/menopause.
2. They Love Strength Training
If you want long-term health - strong bones, muscles, and a resilient body, strength training is non-negotiable. A good PT will help you weave resistance training into your life at least twice a week, in a way that feels accessible and sustainable. And no, you won’t “get bulky.” What you will get is stronger, more confident, and better equipped to kick the effects of ageing (like osteopenia and sarcopenia) firmly to the curb.
3. They Avoid Crash Diets Like the Plague
Crash diets and quick fixes are outdated and harmful. A good coach won’t sell you restriction or calorie obsession, they’ll encourage you to fuel your body properly so your hormones, bones, muscles, and mind are supported. The 90s called, and they can keep their diet culture.
4. They’re a Research/Course Nerd
Coaching women well means staying curious. The best PTs balance lived experience with evidence-based knowledge, keeping up to date with research and professional development. They’re open to learning, evolving their approach, and questioning outdated methods. That’s how they can offer you coaching that actually works for your stage of life.
5. They’ve Actually Coached Women
Sounds obvious, but it’s worth checking. Working with women requires understanding both the physiology and the lived reality, from urinary stress incontinence, to giving birth, to managing PMS or heavy bleeds. Experience matters. And while not every coach needs to have lived it personally, having a PT who knows what it feels like can make a big difference in how you’re supported.
Final Thoughts
The right PT won’t just hand you a workout plan, they’ll support your body, your health, and your stage of life without judgement or gimmicks.
